BAHAY
Bahay is a Filipino restaurant that has had many pop-ups in various locations in recent years. They are soon opening up at a permanent location, but have worked in locations such as The Glimmerman Pub and The Hen’s Teeth. As someone who was born in the Philippines I was honoured to have been asked to work with Bahay on 2 separate occasions.
OVERVIEW
On the first occasion, Bahay requested me to create a design to feature on their social media pages and on some limited edition merchandise when they were in The Glimmerman pub. They wanted to make it a memorable pop-up, and so The Glimmerman was the main feature of the design with the pop-up truck at the front. They also wanted to combine their Irish and Filipino links in the design.
They approached me again when they were working in The Hen’s Teeth. The clients were arranging a small art exhibition in which they wanted to feature Irish-Filipino artists. They asked us each to create a design with the following brief: “The impact living in Ireland has on the Filipino cultural identity ".
THE PROBLEM
For the 1st project, I decided that I would create a design that featured both an Irish and Filipino flag on the side of the Glimmerman building. I felt this captured the true essence of what Bahay means - which is “home”. For the client, home is both Ireland and The Philippines. They were really satisfied with the end result.
On the next occasion, I created a design that was personal to me. With the brief in mind, I came up with my design idea. I identify as both Irish and Filipino, however I have lived in Dublin for most of my life. When asked where I am from, I always respond with “Dublin” which usually results in the response “Where are you actually from?” This is my experience of being a Filipino person who has mostly grown up in Ireland, and both myself and the client were satisfied that the design met the brief.
